Do you encourage our member to SMARTSTART?

SMARTSTART is a system designed with the health seeker or new participant in mind. It allows them to choose how much to do in a Group Fitness class and how long to stay. We would like to have all instructors offer this up in every class that they teach – not just Les Mills classes.

Participants that did this had a 98.8% adherence rate after 30 weeks. This is just unheard of in our industry! Wow! We can help people change their lives when we encourage them to SMARTSTART! Read about the program below and in EVERY class that you teach at our GRYMCA’s, please let our members know that they can SMARTSTART! 🙂

Mary Free Bed YMCA

Hello! We are looking for wellness floor staff, PT’s and Group Fitness instructors (that already work at our Y’s and are interested in obtaining more hours!) to come to our new Mary Free Bed YMCA that will be opening December 7th. We certainly want you to keep your hours, shifts and classes at your current branches, but if you are interested in increasing your hours at the Y, please email me at: tharmon@grymca.org Here is the link for Mary Free Bed Y: https://www.grymca.org/mary-free-bed-ymca/overview/

Whaddya Say?

What do you say? In your classes and with clients do you say things like, “These tricep kickbacks are going to get your arms summer ready!” or “These lunges will lift your backside and you’ll look great in your bathing suit!” Using this kind of motivation with our members might be helpful to some but does it really reinforce our mission of a healthy mind, body and spirit for all?

We all bring lots of baggage with us throughout life. What if I had been bullied or teased about my “ham-hock” arms? Or what if I feel awful about myself and can’t even stand to look at the pictures at the magazines in line at the grocery store? What if I am scared and nervous and want to just be encouraged and supported?

What might this feel like instead? “Keep climbing that hill! You are getting so strong!” “Look at your beautiful smiles, even during these squats – you are all so awesome!” or “You can do this! We are in this together – keep it up, team!” Let’s think about what we say and share some tips and cues with each other. Comment on this below and let’s get a list going of the most awesome things we can say in our classes and while training our members. We can make a BIG POSITIVE impact in the lives of others!
