And the survey says…..

And the Survey Says……

We know that our members like what we do – for the most part – but what can we do to make their experience at our Y’s even better?

In our recent YMCA SEER survey, we discovered some helpful information! Our members WANT our help! They want us to help them be healthier and reach their goals! They want us to give them excellence in our delivery – whether they are personal training, on our wellness floor or in our classes! They want to learn from us and they want to meet other like-minded members at our Y’s! How can we do all of this?  Here are 7 simple and fun ideas.

  1. Smile and say hello to everyone that crosses your path.
  2. If you work on the wellness floor, talk with people – not the ones you see all the time but the ones that look shy, unsure of themselves and in need of encouragement.
  3. If you teach Group Fitness or Aqua Group Fitness classes, begin your class by ALWAYS welcoming new participants and end your class with clapping (except in BODYFLOW, Yoga, etc) and congratulate them on a job well done! This will make them feel cared for and successful!
  4. As a personal trainer, do you always educate your clients? Teach them the names of muscles on a level they can understand. Explain why you’re having them do certain exercises (think corrective movement and injury prevention as this adds SO much value to the service we are providing!)
  5. Introduce and interact! Encourage members at the beginning and end of class to find someone to meet, maybe high-five – and learn the member’s name. Members need to have friends where they workout in order to stay connected and committed. We can help them with that and have fun doing so!
  6. Remind those you interact with that they ARE getting healthier and stronger. Remind them that you LOVE to see their smiling (and sometimes grimacing) faces! Let them know that they matter. Sometimes we know it, but they need to be reminded of these things in order to actually believe it and believe in themselves.
  7. Be a role model. Keep striving for excellence. How is your form? How about your energy? Do you encourage members to both receive and give energy? Member’s in Group classes like to whoop it up but are often a little intimidated. Encourage them to give YOU feedback during class.  “I want to hear you!” “I said, how are you??” If this is done with a huge smile and then positive follow-up, members adore the feeling of belonging and empowerment that this type of interaction can give them!

YOU can make all of this happen and YOU are the ones that make the Y the wonderful place that it is!  Thank you for all that you do and the dedication that you have for helping others!  Did you sign up for our blog?  We need you to ASAP! www.grymcawellness.wordpress.com Thank you!
